Good topic - looks like no one cares eh.....
It depends on our leaders and senior policy makers...to be honest I think they only care about their own futures and in the meantime taking every opportunity to take a trip overseas and do their own personal shopping in Fiji on the way and catching up with friends and family in Fiji. maybe buy some kava to sell in Kiribati when they get back or just save their allowances to buy that car that they wanted....mmmm is that too negative???

Ok I have an idea: -

STOP senior govt workers and Ministers from travelling overseas for meetings/conferences/tours/fishing negotiations and then they can start thinking and acting on what kind of future we would like to make for ourselves; and

STOPall aid (from Taiwan/Aus/NZ/Japan/UN etc) from overseas (with the exception of scholarships) so we can try planning on our own future at our own determination of what we think is best for ourselves collectively as a nation through extensive consultation amongst ourselves (including all marginalised interest groups - youth, unemployed, uneducated, women)...

Is this possible -- of course --- but it takes political will and selflessness of our leaders and it means taking sacrifices for bigger gains to determine our independence...

Is that more positive??? Or am I dreaming....

Ok then lets look at it this way...

Fish is running out ...
RERF is running out...

When these run out - GOD HELP KIRIBATI!!!!

Power to the people who can make a better future for all and not just themslves!

God Bless Kiribati!
Mauri ngke Mahina...e ragn kamimi bwa terana ana future kiribati nakon te ririki anne ao i kakoauaa naba Kouraabi n ana itera akana e taekinii...

Future of our beloved kiribati is very predictable. How? Look at our 'past' and 'present' and compare the trend. Population is growing? Sea level is rising? Continual Building Developments? Declining natural remnants? Compact living space? Scarcity of natural food resources? Water demand? Drought? what else? the list goes on.....and if you project such trend to the future, you get a clear picture of what it would be like.

Solution? SUSTAINABLILITY!!!!

Well, if by 2020 we are still above sea level, then we pretty much are in the hands of our politicians. However, politicians are known to be very sweet during campaigns then turn sour afterwards. Still, the future of Kiribati does not depend on them, it depends on us the people. We vote for our government, we can keep them in check, and we can take demote them if if they are misusing resources.

One things I noticed as well is the fact that some locals do not have any respect for public properties such as street lights. These public properties that are designed for the comfort and safety of the public are always thrown at as part of target practice by various irresponsible locals. If the public takes care of its surrounding then we just might all be in good shape by 2020 and beyond...
Good topic and great answers.

Unfortunately Kiribati will be overpopulated and poverty and crime will be worse on Tarawa in 2020.
i like that idea the "selflessness" one! sounds good!

I agree with your view and ideas Kourabi. Ngkai taan tei aikoa rang tabe ma kainnanoia kain Kiribati ae bwanin ma a tabe riki ma bon oin kainnanoia ma aia koraki. To me, kanga titebo ma a tii take advantage of the post ao aki karaoa raoi tabeia. Ngkana ko taraa ngkai ana ibuobuoki Taiwan ao e a kuri ni katoa namwakaina are nanona bwa e a kan aki kona uotana te tautaetaeka bwa e a kakainanoa naba buokana man te tautaeka teuana. E rang kananokawaki te bwai aei. Tiaki tii aei te kanganga ma another main problem bon te kariki n akea te karaurau ni iango are e na kona n result in overpopulation ao e na manga kariki riki kanganga aika a mwaiti n aron te Unemployment which leads to increase in crime ao a mwaiti kuri kuri riki. Kam titiraki bwa tera te solution?? Sustainability in all things, like energy, use of resources, population growth. ao ai bitakin anuara ngaira I kiribati are ko bon ti tabe ma ngke ao am koraki ao akea riki nakon te iango are selflessness
SO if the current problems still continue to exist, Kiribati in 2020 will be in great trouble but if these problems are solved, we will all be safe and sound

Kiribati people will still remain proud of Kiribati...and there would be heaps of development especially along the sea shore to mitigate the impacts of climate change.....at the same time there would be significant growth of I-Kiribati communities in Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world...those are my initial thoughts..
