A while back I posted a video asking who the singer was. The song was Uringam Irou by Boutabu Bakaoti. A few weeks after finding out his name, I played the song on my radio show and announced to our listeners the name of the artist and that the song could be found on youtube.
I do a radio show in Seattle called "The International Playlist" on the college radio station KGRG FM. We play popular music from all over the world, and one of my goals for doing this show is to bring exposure to Pacific Island music because I believe that some of the world's best, but certainly least known, music comes from the Pacific Islands, and I believe more people need to hear it.
Has anyone here ever heard of Sharzy from Solomon? I know he is popular in the Pacific Islands, but I also hear that his recognition doesn't reach very far beyond the islands.
He was our featured artist one week. I would like to get him in the studio for an interview one of these days and I would certainly LOVE to have a singer from Kiribati on the show. I cannot find any information on Sharzy's record label as far as contacting him or his manager, and I have found literally jack zilch on Kiribati singers.
I have done literally hours of research on this stuff and have come up empty handed. Can anyone here help me out? All I need are names of studios, managers, emails, or phone numbers. Anything helps. I really want to bring light to the Kiribati music scene, as well as the rest of the Pacific Islands, to the United States as well as the show's small international audience (the station broadcasts online so people all over the world with a descent internet connection can listen).
Anyway, so if anyone has any helpful information, let me know.
Thank you!
Live long and prosper!

Hi Andrew,

I read with interest your posting and I personally thank you for registering your keenness and pursuit of Kiribati musics to air in your station. I knew for sure that there were couple of established studios (most privately owned) that produced releases of albums and numbers featuring local artists' songs. I don't have the answers either for you now, but I pop-in to support your idea and to encourage my fellow Kiribati brothers/sisters who have such infor to help you.

best with you
Thanks for the support!
I love the music from Kiribati as well as the rest of the Pacific. There's some real talented people there.
Take care, have a good week.

Hey,

This is quite interesting..I love our Pacific music not just from kiribati..I just wanna add, if you want to interview some Kiribati singers then I suggest Brian Taki is one of Kiribati's best singers today. What kind of music are you interested in? the old Kiribati music with just guitar or the new classic type?
Which college are you broadcasting from? I think it is way cool to be able to see studios like yours do cool stuff like this on the air. Do you have a link to stream your show? Thanks for the information and the best of luck....
This is great Andrew. Thank you so much for your keen interest in Kiribati and Pacific music. I know that this is something really important for our local artists, a chance to be able to take their music beyond their dreams and if this is going to be a gateway for that dream to come true... oh my gosh! I just can't imagine how exciting this is going to be.

Ok, as far as knowing someone with a good musical background in Kiribati, I will personally recommend Tawati Uati.I love all his music. He is a talented musician, singer and song writer and his voice is known throughout Kiribati. This is just my recommendation but let's see what KOC members think.

Thanks!
We broadcast out of Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington near Seattle.
You can check out the station's website and stream online from there. It's www.kgrg.com. From there, you just click on where it says "Listen Live" and then choose your media player.
During the day, the stations format is modern punk, alternative, and hardcore. My show is pretty far away from that format playing alternative rock, hip hop, pop, dance/techno, folk, and then genres that are mainly found in smaller local areas (such as Kiribati, Ukraine, or Kenya). My show is on Saturday Nights from 10pm until Midnight (US Pacific Time).

Old or new, it doesn't matter. We tend to play mostly new stuff, but we have been known to play old stuff as well to help keep the variety. We have played "Tii Ngai" by Bendick and we have played Ruffdogs to.
I will actually go ahead and post the playlist from the Pacific Island Music Special we did back in mid-June in a new comment so you can see what we have played. We played music from all over the Pacific that night and we continue to include any Pacific music we can find in many of our shows. And thank you for the suggestions :)

Hi there Andrew.

I really admire your interest in Pacific Island music. Well, it is true that theres lots and heaps of talented singers in Kiribati but I'm afraid they lack of popularity abroad because Kiribati is not as big as America, England and other continentals that has proffessional resources in the music industry. Not only that but they do need someone like you or someone else that has the potential to promote them abroad. In my beleives, singing is like playing lottery. And how do these good singers play the game??...they need to be heard by big firms like Sony and other big recording companies all over the world. These recording companies are so thirst and can't stop looking for A GREAT UNIQUE VOICE that would sell MILLIONS e.g like American got talents runner up SUSAN BOWLES. How exciting if a voice from such a small tiny islands would hit the jackpot. That will be a BOW WOW.

To be so honest with you, Iam so fortunate of your work and the idea you come up with and im glad to introduce to you if you dont mind...one of the best and great voice ever and was loved, adored and admired by many ears who have heard. This voice popularity in Kiribati and other Pacific Islands starts in the 90s and still lives and admired these days.

Some People in this forum might come up with an idea that im boasting of this person because he is my hubby. NoNO NOoo..please thats not the point. The point is..he is not only my hubby, but he is my BIG FAN like yours. YES I love him so much and always adored his voice.
Im pretty sure that those of those who read these are with me on this line and we are please to introduce and recommend the MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE... Mr Betaia Nehemiah known as B-TY-R..

If you want to hear his old and new albums OR demos. You are most welcome to get one. We can relay one through the internet or by courier post.

Cheers and all the best in your work and ideas.
