Tabwiroa ia the right one...
cheers
Hi! if that is Tabwiroa the original name can u pls explain the word Tabwiroa? because wat i fink...Tabu means secret and iroa comes from the word roroa or neck( sori for the word)...this is wat i fink and could rememeber one old story, tells us that there was a civil war held in Tuarabu village in the past where lots of people were killed at that time so what i hope may be this placeTabuiroa was the site where these bodies buried after the civil war ended...correct me if im wrong. Ao e rang rabwa te discussion iaon aei ... i kakaea naba kan kaetana raoi ba ti aonga naba n aware ao n familiar ma te ara...akea ae na manga waewaeira iaona if they raise the question like ??? nowadays some people use the word Tabuiroa while others use Tabwiroa...ti bubuti te ibuobuoki iaon aei
Thanks Routan for your explanation on the School name it is also my first time to heard that story.
I think for pronunciation Tabwiroa or Tabuiroa it does not really matter but for historical interest I believe it matters and I just realise that this can cause confusions. This is are my thoughts:

You realise that the letter 'w' is recently used to replace the apostrophe ( ' ) which their main purpose is to differenciate the sound like "ba" and "b'a". Nowadays the usage of apostrophe is come an end replaced by a "w" so intead of b'a its bwa may be as part of the evolution of Kiribati language...(sorry as I have limited knowledge in literature...lols) and I think it has to do with it somehow...

The case is that the name 'Tabuiroa' might be the right one since it may be written in that way before the use of the letter "w" what you think??? I like the name which marked the history so Tabuiroa if what my fellow colleague Routan as stated then I have no problem with it...

Some people write Santo Ioteba or Santo Iotebwa and pronounce them exactly the same...

All the above ideas are just my thoughts and you are welcome to commment on them anyway you think it's best.

Tabuiroa might be the correct one but nowadays Tabwiroa becomes common...

Tekeraoi moa
mauri riki ngkami and thanks for sharing ideas on this. I came up with this idea as I want others to share what they think and to make them join the discussion in our group aio ba tabeman a nimatutu ba a tuai uti ehehehe. Regarding to the topic anne, I would use both. I think either one is right as Ititaake mentioned n ana explanation. E bon depend n ana preference te aomata kee. To me, I prefer Tabuiroa because of the history of it. Santo Ioteba school ke Tabuiroa has many history aika a rangi ni interesting perphas it is an old school. Routan I heard that same story mairoun Titau Taniera ngke e principal ngkoa ikekei and one time he talked about it. I still remember that. It is very interesting and that is why a lots of ghosts(anti) n te reirei anne kee lol especially at Girls' domortomries under them there are so many burried bodies. ngaia a roroko sometimes ni kakiriwe ngkana a karaoaki waki aika aki riai. engae nanne ao tai kakamaraki ami karatau ba bon ti te kaoti iango ma tia bane n reitaki n te nano ae ti teuana. so nakoimi ake a kan add riki aia iango ao tai mama ba ti kan ongora.
kam raba riki ao tekeraoi ami weekend!
Mauri guys, gr8 learning this from you all, am not an ex tabuiroa, but did spent a lot of time visiting elder bros and sis there for quite a span of time, so the discussions spurs my interest, and not because I would know more but just a quest to know the true name. I recalled those good old days sleeping in the u-classrooms and watching concert on the water cistern stage...etc
that being said, its becoming apparent that Tabuiroa might be correct, and gr8 story from Routan and Taoata, it reminds me of how every village and even every Kainga’s name are clearly coined to reflect its importance, historical context and sometimes even descriptive...
then there was the linkage with Taburao also in the story.....with linkages in the word “tabu” and place locations as well
also as recently as this week, I was fortunate to learn from a member of the now defunct language board that there was an act passed by parliament for the use of “w” as oppose to (‘)...this was in the early 80’s or so and enacting this in our school curriculum...and I learn also that there was opposition for this from Churches esp the Protestant since the Bible used the original (‘). I didn’t quite get the reasons for the change but its unfortunate and I tend to agree with MJT that it has to do with the evolution of our language. For instance the words “fafule iroun sumong” or naa instead of naba.....
Just a few thoughts on the issue and when considering the name Tabwiroa or Tabuiroa, i guess a paramount question that we should ask ourselves is “What’s in a name”?

I taku bwa e rangi ni critical te issue aei bwa ngkana e bitaki te spelling ao ea karekea naba te confusion .... bwa irou e rangi n okoro Tabuiroa ma Tabwiroa.

Tao tabeman a kateitei iaon te karaki ni kawai n aron ake a taekinaki n aron moan reken aran te mwakoro anne (i aki ataia ngkana te koaua bwa are akea mwina nte boki (no record) ao tao e mena ao bon te karaki ae ea karioa naba te tia reirei anne ... kanga bon te iango). ma e nage n anne ao iai reitan karakinan Tabwiroa imwin anne bwa a roko iai ana Mitinare te Katorika ni katea te reirei ibukiia kain te itera meang ao i nanon te waaki ao tao e kamatauninga ke tao e tara buaka ae Tabuiroa riki ngkai reirein te aro ke tao taan reirei ake tiaki i-Kiribati e kanganga irouia katangan Tabuiroa ai ngaia are ngkana e spelled bwa "Tabwiroa" ao e bebete riki... te iango naba ni kakuakua.

In any case e ataki ngkekei ao ngkai ae aran te reirei anne bon Tabwiroa ao e spelled bwa Tabwiroa. Te ara aei ea tiku bwa aran te reirei (official name) n raona ana names ake tabeua bwa tao CJC ke SJC... ke CSC (Catholic Secondary College) ... araia ngkoa ni botaki ngaia ma Taborio ngkekei. Ibukin anne ao te ara ae Tabwiroa ea reke bwa part of ana official name te reirei hence spelling is very important in this connection ibukina bwa ngkana ko spell Tabuiroa ao ngai irou ko nanona te mwakoro n aba are tao e tei iai te reirei anne ao tia aki ataia bwa e toki ia tian te mwakoro ae Tabuiroa n nako iang nako Taburao ao nako aiaki nako Tuarabu. Ma ngkana ko korea Tabwiroa ao irou ko kananona te reirei ae Tabwiroa are e reke naba iai Auiang.

Kanga ti tabo ma te ara ae Kiribati .. ana translation te ara ae Gilbert... ma ngkana ti korea Kiribati .. e koaua bwa ti kananona ti aba aika Makin n nako Arorae ake ngaia kain te aono ni Kiribati ke te Gilbert group? ... I taku bwa ti ata kaekaan anne bwa e kananonaki Kiribati ae te nation/country ae ana boundary e moa mai Banaba ... Gilbert, Phoenix ao te Line groups... are nanona ngkanne bwa Kiribati bon aia official name taian groups akanne ni combine ke as a whole ... n aron naba Tabwiroa ae ana official name taian reirei (school compounds) aika a mena i Tabuiroa ao i Auiang... bwa are bwai aika a kaokoro aran te reirei ao aran te mwakoro n aba are e tei iai.

Official name of institutions ke organisations ... in this case the school, is the name plus the spellings used when the school was first registered in this case with the Catholic Education Office and later with the Ministry of Education for government recognision. The name is then usually printed on the school's letter head and other stationeries and on on its sign board at the entrance of its campus/premisis... much like the name of offices in Tarawa. Ibukin anne ao (with ana permission Nei Reei Tioti .. photo owner) i kan kaota te tamnei ae i nano aei ibukin ami info bwa enga raoi ana offical name te reirei.

Bon ti te kario iango ao kam raba
